Oh Yay!

I know, I haven't been super talkative lately. I've been working on the last of my Classic Elite projects, and they're finally all done! I'm free now! Huzzah. As Jim and I are planning on moving sometime within the next few months, I'm pausing on submitting more designs as I do not want to worry about getting things to magazines while we're moving. So, in the meantime, I can still design swatches and also get cracking on finishing up some of those WIP's shown on the right side of this screen. They've been haunting me for quite a while now. To be honest, that's exactly why I put those bars there, so they could keep reminding me how many things I've started and left unfinished...
Jim's sweater is high on my list. As are the tire cover and the crocheted cardigan. I want to get all three of these finished before anything else is required of my fingers. Then maybe a few people will be lucky enough to receive something knit for Christmas. Don't hold your breath though... there's only so much time in a day.

Teachy me
September 20th, 2006
|
I taught a class last night at the Fabric Place in Woburn. It wasn't what I would call a typical class. I was in the center of the store and anyone who wandered by could learn how to crochet! I had a great time, and my students all learned so quickly. I was amazed. I had taught a bunch of Girl Scouts once upon a time, but that was my first time teaching adults how to crochet. I really enjoyed teaching something I love so much. It's like I'm spreading it out to more and more people. How fun is that!
I spoke with Cecily at the Hub Mills Factory Store about teaching a Saturday Class every once in a while. Jim's schedule has changed so he's working 9-4 on Saturday's now. I figured, since we're looking into moving soon, that a little extra money couldn't hurt. Plus it will give me something to pass the time while he's working. I'm not sure when this move will be taking place, so I'm going to wait a few days before deciding which Saturday I would like to start this class on. It's definitely something I'll be doing though. I really enjoy it, and I'm sure I will learn a lot in the process as well.

Meet Herbert
September 17th, 2006

Last weekend I just HAD to stop working on the Classic Elite projects enough to get something little out of the way. I had been crocheting so much that I was afraid I'd forget how to knit... I guess. So, I found this cute pattern for a teddy bear and pawed through my stash and found a ball of Princess that worked PERFECTLY for this little bear. I used less than half a ball! He's made on size 3 needles, which is a size I've never used before. He's stuffed with cut up plastic shopping bags. I figured that would work, plus it would save me a few dollars from having to buy poly-fill. It gives him a neet "squish" sound when you handle him. It's kinda neet.
As I was making it someone Jim works with mentioned that she would love to have a knit teddy bear, and it just so happens that her birthday was on Thursday, so I plan on giving her Herbert when I see her next. I was originally making it for my friend's baby, who's due in November, but since it only took 2 days to make, and I've got plenty of yarn left, I can just make another one.

More designs are in the works!
September 13th, 2006

Yippy! I was able to get 3 more designs mailed out to Vogue Knitting for their Summer 2007 issue. I was pretty bumbed that I didn't get anything sent to any Spring magazines. I totally forgot that magazines have Summer issues too! So, this morning I sent out 3 designs for Vogue, and also 1 design for another "Knitting on the go" book: Crochet Shawls. The deadline's friday, so I'm hoping they get there on time. Next week is the deadline for Interweave, so I'm hoping to have some ready to go to them over the weekend. I have one that Classic Elite didn't take for some reason... that I think might be Interweave material. There are a few ideas bopping around in my head that are dying to be created. So maybe I'll get to a few of those.

Title goes here.

So, over the weekend I was able to finally finish one of the Classic Elite patterns! Huzzah! I'm so happy to be finished with that sweater. I really like how it came out, and I definitely want one for myself. I've been somewhat tossing the idea around of asking my mom to make one for me. She crochets... I totally think it's a pattern that she could do. I'm really not the type of person to make the same thing twice. It's unfortunate, because a lot of the things that I make for Classic Elite etc... are things I would love to have as my own to wear and abuse as I please.
The second Classic Elite garment is going by seemingly quickly. (thank god!) As I said before, I don't enjoy knitting or crocheting on a deadline... or by obligation. I'd much rather work on something because I truely wanted to work on it, and not because I have to. It takes the fun out of it. Meh... oh well. It'll be over soon. The photo shoot is 2 weeks away, so it will have to be done by then. I'm so looking forward to the freedom I will have after the shoot... (wanders off to fantasize about what I'll do with all the free knitting time)...

It's Friday!
September 8th, 2006
|
Yippy! I love Friday's! Today is the design submission deadline for Cast On magazine. I was able to get one sent out to them yesterday. However, I'm not quite sure it will arrive to them today, so I also e-mailed a PDF file of the design. Hopefully they do not get upset that I sent it both ways.
I'm really happy that I have had the time to get some designs submitted this season. I feel like I had a lull where I wasn't designing as much as I would have liked to. Makeing the garments that are selected for the magazines, etc... takes too much time. At least for this Classic Elite season I'm only having to make 2 crochet garments. But unfortunately, I'm basically the only crocheter we have, and they've been wanting to put more and more crochet garments into the line... so I dunno how this is going to work. I think we'll need to get more crocheters if this is to continue. I'd much rather be a designer and pattern writer than someone who spends an insane amount of precious time crocheting a garment. I could have designed 20 swatches in that time! Ah well... things always change, so, we'll see what happens.

Why do I blog?
September 7th, 2006
|
I was poking around on the Knitters Review Forum and found a thread with the following questions asking why people blog... so, I figured, "meh, why not?"
Why did you start blogging?
It seemed like a good way to talk about the yarn related things that were going on in my head. Most actual people that I know aren't super interested in hearing about yarn, so I had to get it out somehow!
What do you blog about mainly?
Yarn, and life... I dunno, whatever comes to mind.
What motivates you to keep blogging?
I enjoy telling people about what I'm doing, and by doing it in blog form, I don't have to keep repeating myself telling the same stories over and over and over, which would bore me to death. So,I just blog them and that way I only need to tell them once and lots of people get to learn about them.
Is your audience mainly inside your own country or around the world?
Beats me. Probably in the U.S.
When you blog, how would you describe what you write? Is it part of a conversation? Is it ranting?
Probably more like a story. It's not quite conversation like, because a conversation (in my mind) requires another person... and ranting just doesn't sound pleasant, so I'm not going to consider it that... who picked these two ways of describing what I write... I just write like how I talk, and think... I guess?
Is it a daily diary?
Oh... no. I leave a lot of my life out. I only put mostly things in my blog that I think the people who would read a yarny blog might like to read. I think by keeping it slighly topic oriented I keep myself interested in working with yarn.
Is it journalism?
maybe? Depends on your definition of Jounalism...
Is it some or all of these things at different times?
Sure... I'm kinda getting sick of answering these questions...
Does the definition matter?
NO! and I'm glad this one was asked. I was wondering why I was being asked to "label" something. I hate labels, and can't stand trying to categorize something. I like to just BE. Never mind BEing this or BEing that... it doesn't matter what it is! (I guess sometimes I rant. hehe)
Ok... well, that was fun, sorta...

Zippy zip zip...
September 5th, 2006
|
Wow, that weekend went by fast. I guess I kept myself pretty busy. I was able to come up with three swatches to submit for summer magazines. I've never used a zipper in any of my designs before, but one of these new ones will have a zipper. I went to Joanne's on Friday and picked one up. I just looked at it, and I don't think it's going to work the way I was hoping. I guess there's more than one kind of zipper. I was hoping to use one that opens all the way, and when you want to zip it back up you have to thread one side back onto the zippy thing... like a jacket. But this one has a block at the end, so I can unzip it, but it won't open all the way. Maybe I can use it for a bag or something. So, I guess I'll need to go zipper shopping again, and pay more attention this time!
As for these Classic Elite projects that I've been working on, I'm almost done with the last piece of the first sweater! Huzzah! I'll be so happy once this sweater is finished! The second one seems to be going really quickly, so I have no worries about how long that one will take me to finish. I'm hoping to have the first one finished by Thursday. We shall certainly see how it goes!
