The Crochet Youth

January 4th, 2009
Last Monday I brought a few bags full of yarn to my mom and little sister (well, she'll be 12 this month, but she's still the littlest sister I have). My mom crochets and knits, and my little sister—Michelle—crochets. I'm constantly amazed at how much she is learning, and teaching herself about crochet. She's using it more and more as a creative outlet. I love it!

Yesterday she called me up to tell me she was working on a scarf and she couldn't wait to show me. She called again a few hours later to tell me it was finished! It just so happened that I had planned on seeing them yesterday evening, so she brought the scarf with her and gave it to me right when I walked in the door.

It reminds me of some of the creations I was coming up with at her age... experimenting with increasing and decreasing in my own way, not really knowing how anything is supposed to happen—just making it up as I went along. It makes me happy to see her embrace a craft that seems to bring joy and peace to so many people.
